At a black-tie event hosted by American Compass, Vice President J.D. Vance jokingly called interviewer Oren Cass an “asshole” after being introduced as an “intellectual” and reminded of his time at National Review.
The crowd laughed, and Cass took it in stride, admitting he also worked there.
Vance’s remarks come amid his criticism of judicial independence, arguing courts should defer more to the president, especially on immigration. He questioned how much due process undocumented immigrants should receive and defended mass deportation authority, framing it as a political judgment voters support and courts should respect rather than block.
