Our Daughter Expected Us to Watch Her Kids on Our 40th Anniversary Trip But This Time, We Said No and Left Her to Handle the Consequences

Posted on September 12, 2025

Amanda, always persuasive, tried to turn our quiet anniversary getaway into a family trip. Over dinner,

she hinted at joining us with her kids, using guilt and sweet talk. Denise and I tried to hold firm, explaining it was a couple’s trip, but Amanda didn’t back down—calling daily, crying, and even getting the grandkids to plead. Eventually, Denise wavered, and I gave in. We canceled Oregon and booked a Florida resort with the whole family.

As the trip neared, Amanda’s real intentions surfaced—expecting us to babysit while she and her husband enjoyed spa days and nights out. Our special anniversary had been reduced to free childcare. Frustrated, I made a decision. I rebooked Oregon in secret and told Denise later. She was stunned but thrilled.

At the airport, I called Amanda and told her we wouldn’t be going to Florida. Her anger was loud, but I calmly explained this trip was about our marriage, not babysitting. Oregon turned out to be everything we needed—peaceful, romantic, and a chance to reconnect after 40 years of marriage.

When we returned, Amanda was bitter, even posting online about it. But after juggling the kids alone on her own trip, she understood. She never apologized directly, but her attitude changed. She began to respect our boundaries, and we walked away with something far greater than a vacation—we reclaimed our space, our time, and each other.
