David yelled at her daughter Rhonda after he found out that she was pregnant, “PREGNANT?! You must be out of your mind, Rhonda!”
She was a daughter of a wealthy family, as opposed to her boyfriend Peter, who was the father of the baby. Her family had a big textile company. Her father raised her alone as she lost her mother when she was two.
David had worked hard for his daughter to live the best life she could, and he had spent a lot for the clothes Rhonda would wear, food she would eat, and also for her education. But he was a control maniac over his daughter.
As Rhonda tried to keep her pregnancy as a secret from her father, as time passed her belly grow larger and David found out about the pregnancy. “You’re going to get rid of that child, Rhonda. Do you get it?”
“No, dad,” Rhonda said.
“Then you’ll have to figure out how you’re going to raise that child yourself,” David said. “No one in our family has ever dared to marry someone from a lower class. So if you want to raise that man’s blood, get the hell out of my house!”
As Rhonda was crying, she turned to her father and said, “Maybe if mom was still alive, she would have supported me. But that’s fine. I’ll raise the child alone and prove you wrong.”
Rhonda went to Peter’s house, as she was told to get rid of the baby. She explained what her father said to Peter, and explained that she wants to create a family with Peter. But Peter revealed that he was not ready for a responsibility like that, and refused to be with Rhonda.
“But Peter, this is our baby. How can you….” Rhonda said, as she was devastated.
“Look, Rhonda, that baby and you are causing me nothing but trouble right now. You know what, just forget about us! It’s over!” Peter said adamantly.
“You were so happy when you found out about the pregnancy! What happened?” Rhonda turned to Peter.
“Because you’re nobody right now, babe. Your dad kicked you out, and I can’t raise that kid, so goodbye,” Peter said, and shut the door on Rhonda’s face.
As she was walking on the streets without knowing what to do, she felt a pain on her abdomen. As she was writhing on the ground, a woman noticed Rhonda, and took her to a hospital, where Rhonda gave birth to her son. Angela, the woman who helped her revealed to Rhonda that the baby was healthy, after Rhonda woke up.
“Thank -Thank you for helping me,” Rhonda said.
“Are you new in town? I noticed you were carrying your luggage.” Angela asked.
As Rhonda started to cry, “I don’t want to live here any longer,” she said. “I just want to get out of Texas. But I’m not sure I can provide a good life for my child.”
“I used to have a daughter your age. When we found out she was pregnant, we were furious and kicked her out of the house.” Angela turned to Rhonda.
“My husband owns Sunrise Airlines, and we were wealthy enough to support our daughter. But we were opposed to such a young pregnancy. I wish I could have helped her. She took her own life because she couldn’t bear all of it. I don’t want someone else to go through that! It’s a terrible place to be in.”
Angela continued as, “However, it’s too late now. Don’t worry, I’ll help you. I can book the ticket for you. Make sure your child lives a good life in a new place.”
“You’ve already done a lot for me. I’m afraid I won’t be able to return this favor.” Rhonda said to Angela.
“Please,” the woman smiled, “If I help you, it’d be like I helped my daughter. And it will help me get over my guilt.”
As Rhonda boarded the plane, she started to question her ability to provide a good life for her son. “What if I am unable to care for my child? What if he ends up living with me on the streets?” She thought.
As she was afraid, she left her baby on the plane, and left it. When the plane left the airport, she realized what she had done, but it was too late now. A stewardess, Lincy, found the baby and the note next to him. When she read it, she realized how bad the situation was for both the mother and the baby.
“I’m a poor mother who couldn’t care for her child. Don’t waste your time looking for me if you find this note. I would never have been able to provide a good life for him. I hope you accept and cherish him as your own. I’d be delighted if you named him Matthew. Matthew Harris. That was the name I had chosen for him.”
13 years had passed since Rhonda left her son on that plane. She was now working at a stable job and was financially strong enough to provide. But she was constantly thinking about her son, and the regret she has for leaving him.
For seven years, she struggled with homelessness. As time passed, she found her son, Matthew, and had met with him. “My mom? You must be kidding me!” Matthew said during their meeting. “Where have you been all these years? I don’t need you! I am happy with my adoptive parents.”
As she found the adoptive mother, it was no other than the stewardess Lincy.
“I’m sorry, Matthew,” Rhonda said. “I know you’re upset, and you don’t want to accept me, but can’t you give me one chance?”
“No way!” Matthew said. “You are a mean woman who left me all alone. If my parents didn’t adopt me, I’d be in an orphanage today!”
“But Matthew,” Rhonda said. “I didn’t want to do that. Will you not let me explain why I left you?”
After his adoptive parents had suggested that he should listen Rhonda, she revealed the story of her life, and how she was forced herself to leave him on the plane.
“I can forgive you, maybe,” Matthew said after he listened Rhonda. “But I can’t call you mom. I have only one mother.”
As ten years passed after their meeting, Matthew is now 23, and working as a scientist in New York. Through their relationship and time, he forgave Rhonda, and called her mother.
